Botanical classification: Juglans nigra. Fam.: Junglandaceae.
GENERAL
Main products: Sawn wood, veneer.
Natural attributes - structure - origins: Medium weight wood (640 kg/m³) with heartwood of black-brown color to purplish-black. It is usualy straight grained, but sometimes wavy or curly grain is present. The texture is rough (porous wood). It grows in Eastern U.S. and Ontario, Canada
Natural durability in time: Very resistant to fungus. The sapwood may be infected by the bug Lyctus.
Mechanical attributes: Strong, hard wood with average density, moderate flexural and crushing strength and low inflexibility.
Density: R (12-15%) = 0.64 g/cm³
WOOD PROPERTIES AND PROCESSING OPERATIONS
Drying behavior and stability after drying: It dries rather slowly with honeycombing tendency and requires special attention to avoid degradation and checking. There is little dimensional variability after drying.
Impregnation behavior: The heartwood is resistant to impregnation.
Bending behavior: Wood with good flexural behaviour during steaming.
Working properties - tool blunting: Works with hand tools and machines without difficulty, with moderate tool blunting.
Νailing and screwing: Good nailing, screwing with satisfactory good grip.
Gluing behavior: Good.
Dyeing and finishing: Very good paint, very good finish.
APPLICATIONS
In the USA used for gun handles. High quality furniture, interior joinery, shipbuilding, musical instruments, woodwork, turnery, decorative veneer with different designs.
